Lehrendenmobilität als strategisches Element der Internationalisierung von Hochschulen

Professor Dr. Thomas Hirth, Vizepräsident für Transfer und Internationales am KIT, beleuchtete in seiner Keynote Lecture die Lehrendenmobilität als zentrales strategisches Instrument in der Internationalisierungsarbeit deutscher Hochschulen und bot praxisnahe Einblicke in bewährte Ansätze, die die internationale Lehre gezielt stärken können. Der Vortag thematisierte die Chancen, Herausforderungen und die strategische Bedeutung der Lehrendenmobilität für die deutsche Hochschullandschaft, mit dem Ziel, Impulse für eine tiefergehende Auseinandersetzung an den Hochschulen zu geben und gemeinsame Wege zur Stärkung der internationalen Lehrendenmobilität zu erkunden.

Vizepräsident für Transfer und Internationales, Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT)

Professor Dr. Thomas Hirth, geboren 1962 in Michelbach/Kreis Rastatt, studierte Chemie an der Universität Karlsruhe (TH), einer der Vorgängereinrichtungen des KIT, und promovierte anschließend in Karlsruhe am Institut für Physikalische Chemie und Elektrochemie. Seit 1992 war er in verschiedenen Funktionen bei der Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft tätig, zuletzt als Bereichsleiter Umwelt-Engineering am Fraunhofer-Institut für Chemische Technologie ICT in Pfinztal. Im Dezember 2007 übernahm er die Leitung des Fraunhofer-Instituts für Grenzflächen- und Bioverfahrenstechnik IGB in Stuttgart. Von 2012 bis 2015 war Hirth Sprecher des Verbunds Life Sciences und Mitglied des Präsidiums der Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Seit April 2008 hatte er zudem eine Professur an der Universität Stuttgart und die Leitung des Instituts für Grenzflächenverfahrenstechnik und Plasmatechnologie IGVP der Universität Stuttgart inne. Von 2012 bis 2015 war Hirth Prodekan der Fakultät 4 Energie-, Verfahrens- und Biotechnik der Universität Stuttgart. Am 1. Januar 2016 trat Thomas Hirth sein Amt als Vizepräsident am KIT an. Seine zweite Amtszeit begann am 1. Januar 2022 und endet am 31. Dezember 2027.

Strengthening Faculty Mobility: Key Lessons from a Blended Teaching Collaboration

This presentation explored a collaborative pilot project between Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin) and Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), offering practical insights from lecturers' and administrators' experiences. It traced the project's evolution from inception to implementation, offering insights into the opportunities and challenges encountered. The discussion highlighted the significance of international teaching cooperation and faculty mobility for educators and students, sharing key lessons learned. Additionally, it briefly shared ideas and thoughts on how institutions might foster such initiatives and support their lecturers. 

Former Project Manager of the OpenU Project and e-Learning Consultant, Freie Universität Berlin

René Perfölz worked as a project manager and e-learning specialist in the Una Europa project "OpenU" from 2020 to 2022 at the Center for Digital Systems at Freie Universität Berlin. In this role, he was instrumental in designing, planning, and implementing digital, international learning and teaching scenarios aimed at enhancing international collaboration and fostering both virtual and blended mobility among higher education institutions within the Una Europa University Alliance. Since 2023, he has provided consultancy services to academic staff and educators on educational technologies and the application of AI-supported technologies in academic instruction and learning processes. He contributed to the BMBF-funded project "IMPACT - Implementation of AI-based Feedback and Assessment with Trusted Learning Analytics in Universities," where he supported the development of an AI-supported chatbot for text analysis to augment the advisory services available to prospective students. Since 2024, he has been engaged in the project "FUtureLMS" at Freie Universität Berlin, where he conducts analyses on the current and prospective requirements for a technical infrastructure and associated services to support digital teaching, learning, and examination scenarios, and evaluates scalable LMS infrastructure solutions. 

International Cooperation Advisor and Adj. Professor (Privatdozent) Freie Universität Berlin

Dr. Berthold Kuhn is a political scientist and international cooperation adviser specializing in policies and governance for sustainable development. He serves as an adjunct professor (Privatdozent) at the Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science (OSI), Freie Universität Berlin, and works as a senior consultant to the European Commission, United Nations organizations, German development cooperation, think tanks, consulting firms, and nonprofit organizations. He is currently based in Xiamen, China. Dr. Kuhn co-authored "Global Perspectives on Megatrends" (Ibidem, Columbia University Press, 2022) and is involved in several follow-up research and dialogue projects.

Assoc. Professor at Facultad Filología Universidad Complutense de Madrid

Asunción López-Varela Azcárate is Assoc. Prof. in the Department of English Studies at Universidad Complutense Madrid, Spain. In 2007 she created the research program Studies on Intermediality and Intercultural Mediation SIIM which she still coordinates. The program has received funding from national and international sources. López-Varela has been awarded various grants, including a Fulbright Visiting Scholarship at Harvard University and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship. A proactive member of the profession, López-Varela has been Vice-Chair at Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Postdoctoral Fellowships, Social Sciences and Humanities (SOC) and is a member of Marie Curie Alumni Association MCAA. She was also President of the European Society of Comparative Literature and is Research Chair and chief editor of the New Directions in the Humanities Network since its creation. Her activities as editor and member of scientific committees in various academic journals are extensive and can be seen in her personal webpage at SIIM, PUBLICATIONS,GOOGLE-SCHOLAR,ORCID andACADEMIA.

Opportunities and Challenges of Professorships at German Universities from the Perspective of International Scientists

International scientists have different individual needs depending on their biographical background in various international science systems. In the discussion moderated by Mr. Wiarda, questions of successful recruitment and long-term integration of international scientists at university and in the non-university environment were addressed as well as the motivation for pursuing a career in Germany. Furthermore, the incentives offered by the German university system and the challenges at the system level were discussed.

MBA - Appointment Management, Onboarding and Dual Career Service Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms Universität Bonn

Heike Rauer works in Appointment Management, Onboarding, and Dual Career Service at the University of Bonn. She has worked at the university for over 35 years in various positions. She served as the head of the HR department for academics for more than 15 years, supported the establishment of the newly founded research department as deputy head of department, and has been providing assistance to newly appointed professors from Germany and abroad since the university was nominated as a University of Excellence in 2018. Her role is to support them in personal and professional matters and to ensure a smooth transition and settlement in Germany.

Professor of Computational Network Science RWTH Aachen University

I studied Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at ETH Zurich with a focus on communication systems. After a MSc in Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College London (Neurotechnology stream), I moved to the Mathematics Department to obtain my PhD under the supervision of Prof. Mauricio Barahona and Prof. Sophia Yaliraki. Following my PhD, I worked in Belgium, jointly at the Université catholique de Louvain and at the University of Namur, as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. In November 2016, I moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. From July 2017 onwards I was a Marie Skłodowska Curie Fellow at MIT and the University of Oxford, before joining RWTH Aachen University in June 2020, supported by the NRW Return Programme (2019). I have been awarded an ERC Starting Grant in 2022.
