Meeting between the HRK President and Students: Together for high quality studies

The President of the German Rectors' Conference (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz - HRK), Prof. Dr. Margret Wintermantel, invited representatives of the major nationwide student associations to Berlin for talks on the current situation at the universities. The student associations represented were the fzs (freier zusammenschluss von studentInnenschaften), the Ring Christlich-Demokratischer Studenten, the Juso-Hochschulgruppen, the Bundesverband Liberaler Hochschulgruppen, Die Linke.SDS, Campusgrün, the Bundesrat der Evangelischen StudentInnengemeinde, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Katholischer Hochschulgemeinden and Aktive des Bundesweite Bildungsstreikbündnisses.

The goal was to have an open exchange of opinions which would also serve as initial preparation for the "Bologna Summit", which the HRK President aims to hold.

At the meeting, the participants exchanged their assessment of the how the academic reforms are progressing with the transition to Bachelor's and Master's programmes. They also addressed the problems that exist as far as individual student financing via BAföG is concerned, as well as the range of scholarships and grants offered in Germany and also the topic of student participation.

All agreed that the goal of the academic reforms must be to offer academic studies that provide students with appropriate freedoms and allow them to design and organise their own individual studies. The participants also agreed that those involved had to work together on solving the problems that currently exist as far as the implementation of these reforms is concerned. The participants urgently called for the policymakers to finally make the financial resources needed for good and individual student advice and support available. The participants agreed to continue the talks.
