Peter-André Alt to become new HRK President

24. April 2018

Professor Dr Peter-André Alt, President of the Free University of Berlin, is set to become the new President of the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) as of 1 August. He was voted in for a three-year term of office by the General Assembly in Mannheim today with an overwhelming majority.

The future HRK President studied German Studies, Political Science, History and Philosophy at the Free University of Berlin, where he also studied for his doctorate and habilitated. After taking on professorships at the Ruhr University Bochum and Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg, Alt made his way back to the Free University as a professor in 2005. Having held the position of Dean of the Department of Philosophy and Humanities for two years, he was elected as the President of the Free University of Berlin in 2010.

The 57-year-old was the Chair of the Berlin State Rectors’ Conference from 2011 to 2012 and 2017 to 2018. He started a two-year stint as the Chairman of the Executive Board of German U15 in 2014.

Alt will be taking over from Professor Dr Horst Hippler, who has represented the HRK since 2012.

Each HRK President is in office for three years, with the option of being re-elected once after that. Following a change to the HRK’s rules of procedure back in 2015, a selection committee was put in place for the first time, with Peter-André Alt being the only candidate to be put forward.
