Universities adopt a national Code of Conduct on studies by foreigners

The General Meeting of the German Rectors' Conference (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz - HRK) adopted a National Code of Conduct in Leipzig yesterday on studies by foreigners. The Code of Conduct aims to ensure that students from abroad receive the quality of support and advice needed when studying in Germany or that this support and advice is improved to ensure this. The code defines quality standards for foreigners studying at German universities.

In the international competition for the very best students and scientists, it is essential to raise the appeal of Germany as a centre of science and research and to actively  promote and advertise study and research opportunities in Germany. This calls on the universities to create attractive study and career offers as well as to develop appropriately focused, hospitable frameworks and conditions for the stay, and to make these programmes and services visible and transparent worldwide by means of specifically designed marketing measures.

HRK President Prof. Dr. Margret Wintermantel, speaking in Berlin today, said: "The universities have already developed many procedures and instruments to support and advise international students and scientists. The Code of Conduct developed as part of GATE Germany documents the fact that the commitment made by the universities to ensuring that appropriate support and advice is provided is recognised as a key condition for the sustainable success of a stay completed at German universities by foreign students, doctoral students, as well as scientists and researchers."

Within the scope of the International Strategy of the HRK, the HRK supports the central Internationalisation Objectives of the German universities.
