The prize worth 50,000 euros is presented once a year in alternating disciplines. Following Medicine, Law and Economic Science, the prize has now been awarded in Engineering and Computer Science. The jury of experts made up of representatives of the relevant disciplines, representatives of business and industry, specialists in the didactics of higher education, as well as students chose the winner from a total of 34 nominations.
"We see excellent teaching as being just as important as top-flight achievements in the field of research. That's what this prize is all about," said Prof. Dr. Andreas Schlüter, Secretary General of the Stifterverband.
"Both in his work and in his person, Oliver Vornberger calls for students to be seen and taken seriously as independent learners and hence for them to be supported in every possible way. And this is where he very successfully uses multimedia tools, some of which he has even developed himself," said Jury Chairman, HRK Vice-President Prof. Dr. Wilfried Müller. "He not only enjoys the highest respect and acknowledgement of his students and of the University of Osnabrück. His e-Learning tools are also being used at many other universities, and his exceptionally well structured and prepared basic lectures are enormously appreciated as podcasts by a large number of internet users of all kinds."
The award ceremony for the 2009 Ars legendi Prize will be held during the HRK General Meeting in Aachen on 20 April.
