The Bavarian Minister President Edmund Stoiber will hold the keynote speech.
Three discussion rounds will additionally examine the topic. These will address the needs for and requirements of higher education, respectively, investments in science and research despite the dire public finances situation, and, finally, ideal higher education structures and legislative frameworks for productive academic work. Among others, the President of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK), Professor Dr. Johanna Wanka, the Rhineland-Palatinate Minister of Finances, Gernot Mittler, and the Senator for Science and Research in Hamburg, Dr. Jörg Dräger, have confirmed their participation in the panel discussions.
The German Rectors' Conference sees itself as the Voice of the German Universities. It is the voluntary association of currently 262 state (public) and state-recognised universities. More than 98% of all students in Germany are matriculated in its member institutions. Practically all types of higher education institutions are represented: besides the universities and the Fachhochschulen (universities of applied sciences), these are also the universities of education, the colleges of art and music, and the church and theological colleges.
