Nationwide Study Place Exchange launched
1.9.2010 - The nationwide Study Place Exchange aims to help make as much of the admissions capacities at German universities and higher education institutions as available as possible, including in the Winter Semester 2010/11. Those interested in studying can find up-to-the-minute information on the university places that are still available. The universities constantly enter the degree programmes that still have available capacities into the system, depending on when applications are received and on when the replacement candidate process has been completed.

HRK: The Federation must make a stronger commitment to the universities
30.7.2010 - During the current discussion over the future of federalism, HRK President Margret Wintermantel appreciates the proposal of NRW Schools Minister Sylvia Löhrmann to abolish the ban on cooperation. The current situation cannot continue, namely that the Federation's options for cooperating and collaborating remain restricted to just a few "joint expenditures". The Federation must take on a much greater formative role than is currently possible.

HRK: National Scholarship Programme must be borne by a joint effort between politics and industry
29.7.2010 - HRK President Margret Winternmantel today commented on the current discussion over the National Scholarship Programme. If the state increasingly withdraws from the field of student financing, a greater commitment by private sponsors is needed for the National Scholarship Programme to become a success. But also the Federal Goverment should become much more active than in the past in organising the joint effort by the state and industry for the Scholarship Programme.

Fundamentally new structures for accreditation: HRK calls for an "Institutional Audit" for the universities
19.7.2010 - In the opinion of the HRK, the accreditation system in Germany needs to be reformed fundamentally. The Rectors' Conference proposes the introduction of an 'Institutional Audit', which reviews whether a university's structures and processes are suitable for achieving the quality goals in teaching and studies which it has set itself.

The latest BAföG figures show that there is further need for action
14.7.2010 - Following the publication of the latest BAföG figures, HRK President Margret Wintermantel said: “The last BAföG increase of 2008 had an effect. The 7.8% rise in the number of supported students is very pleasing. However, it also shows that the Federal Government's planned further continual improvement of the funding rates and the tax-free allowances are necessary."

The last BAföG increase of 2008 had an effect. However, since the number of students has risen, the proportion of BAföG recipients has only increased slightly. The President of the German Rectors´ Conference, Prof. Dr. Margret Wintermantel, demanded a solution for the 23rd BAföG amendment when the Mediation Committee convenes on 14 September.

HRK and DSW commenting on BAföG-debate of the Federal Council (Bundesrat)
8.7.2010 - Prior to the meeting of the Federal Council (Bundesrat), at which the federal states will decide on the planned BAföG increase, the presidents of the German Rectors' Conference and the Deutsches Studentenwerk declared that the Federation and the federal states must not carry out their dispute over financial questions on the backs of the students. Wanting now, of all times, to renegotiate the Federal-State financing ratio as far as the BAföG Federal Training Assistance Act is concerned is the wrong manoeuvre to take and will merely torpedo the correct and important increase.

New HRK Project: University consultancy in future-orientated teaching
30.6.2010 - A new project of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) offers selective advice and consultancy for the universities on creating academic structures and degree programmes. The knowledge from and for the universities and higher education institutions needed for designing good degree programmes will be collected by the HRK. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research has made six million euros available for this over a period of four years.

Education Report 2010: More young people than expected want to study

The fundamental reason for this lies in the growing proportion of pupils and students holding a higher education entrance qualification. HRK President emphatically rejects accusations by Thuringia's Science Minister
9.6.2010 - "With his accusations towards the universities, Minister Matschie once again returned to the undignified and unproductive game of passing the buck in respect of the Bologna reforms. The universities are doing their agreed homework, are checking and revising their degree programmes wherever necessary, and all of this in close communication with the students", stated HRK President Wintermantel, after Thuringia's Science Minister, Christoph Matschie, had warned the universities to act quickly.

The science ministers are sending the right signal to the heads of government." HRK President on the state finance ministers: Attack on BAföG irresponsible
21.5.2010 - "The finance ministers of the federal states want to dumb down Germany to save costs. They are irresponsibly attacking the planned and necessary increase in Federal Training Assistance (BAföG) ," said the HRK-President Margret Wintermantel. The Finance Committee of the German Bundesrat had strictly rejected the Federal Government's plans to improve the student funding.

HRK welcomes the Joint Initiative for Teaching: "High quality teaching lies at the core of Bologna."
17.5.2010 - At the Bologna Conference federal Education Minister Schavan officially announced a Joint Initiative for Quality Teaching. Within the scope of the funding programme, the federal and state governments will support university teaching over the next ten years with additional financial resources. HRK President Wintermantel expressed her satisfaction with the results of the conference: "It sends out an important signal that at long last investments are being made in quality."
