German universities launch Russian Weeks

7 May 2012 - Sixteen German universities are participating in the 2012 Russian Weeks as a contribution to the "German-Russian Year of Education, Science, and Innovation". The Russian Weeks are sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung – BMBF) and coordinated by the HRK. HRK president Hippler on federal government plans for Freedom of Science Act: State legislation must grant equal freedom to universities

2 May 2012 - HRK-President Horst Hippler welcomed the draft law on freedom of science and research approved by the federal cabinet. Science and research needed this freedom. This applied to universities as much as it did to other types of institutions. He therefore called on the federal states to grant equal conditions simultaneously to universities. more»

HRK on the Bologna Follow-Up Conference in Bucharest

27 April 2012 – The HRK has underlined the Bucharest commitment of the European ministers of education to support the universities, to a socially equitable broader access to higher education and to an unbureaucratic recognition of academic achievements across Europe. It is disappointed that the ministers only agreed to “talks” on the issue of adequate public funding of universities. Blue Card makes sense, but bureaucratic hurdles are still too high for academics

27 April 2012 – HRK-President Margret Wintermantel has called the legislation to implement the EU directive on highly skilled workers certainly sensible. It increased the competitiveness of German universities on the international playing field. However, the HRK felt that the minimum salary rates are still too high, since remuneration of research associates employed at universities, as well as of doctoral candidates, is frequently quite low. more»

Increasing responsibility of universities for the quality of their own teaching and studies

27 April 2012 - The General Meeting of the HRK put forward concrete proposals for establishing an “institutional quality audit” and therefore underlined the demand for the further development of the German accreditation system. A quality audit evaluates whether a university’s structures and procedures are fit for purpose in terms of achieving the standards of teaching and study as defined by the university itself. more»

Horst Hippler becomes new HRK President

24 April 2012 - Prof. Horst Hippler, President of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), will take over the presidency of the HRK. He was elected at the HRK´s General Meeting in Hamburg for the term 1 May 2012 to 31 August 2015. more»

HRK General Meeting: Guidelines for fixed-term employment contracts at universities

24 April 2012 - The General Meeting of the HRK unanimously agreed on guidelines regarding fixed-term employment for academic and artistic staff. The guidelines include a commitment by the universities to offer academics a career path that is secure and can be planned. more»

HRK Executive Board: quality assurance guidelines for doctoral studies

24 April 2012 - The Executive Board of the HRK has adopted eleven guidelines for the quality assurance of doctoral examinations and put them forward at the General Meeting of the HRK. The Executive Board invited all universities who are authorised to confer doctoral degrees to discuss these guidelines in their committees responsible for doctoral studies and to adopt them for their own institutions. more»

HRK admits Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University as a member

24 April 2012 - The General Meeting of the HRK admitted Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg – DHBW) as its newest member university. The state university has approximately 28,000 students and 600 full-time professors. HRK now has 267 member universities. more»

2012 Ars Legendi Prize presented at the HRK Annual Assembly: Tribute paid to social scientists from Esslingen University of Applied Sciences and Mainz University

23 April 2012 - At the Annual Assembly of the HRK, Prof. Nina Kölsch-Bunzen of Esslingen University of Applied Sciences and Dr Malte Persike of Mainz University were awarded the 2012 Ars Legendi Prize for teaching excellence. The prize, now in its seventh year, is jointly awarded by the Stifterverband and the HRK for outstanding achievements in university teaching. It is endowed with €50,000. more»

HRK Annual Assembly opens at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences: Is the eurozone crisis threatening the development of higher education in Germany?

23 April 2012 - The possible consequences of the eurozone crisis for German science and research provide the topic for this year’s Annual Assemblyof the HRK with approximately 300 representatives from higher education, politics, business, and society. From research maps to less studied subjects: A new era in Franco-German university collaboration

28 March 2012 - The presidents of the French Rectors’ Conference (CPU) and the HRK were in agreement that the accreditation systems of both countries must be more strongly directed toward audit processes to increase the level of university autonomy and hence lead to greater productivity. They agreed to establish a Franco-German research map and a film project for students. more»

2012 Ars legendi Prize goes to Esslingen and Mainz

28 March 2012 - The 2012 Ars legendi Prize for outstanding university teaching in the social sciences has been awarded to Nina Kölsch-Bunzen of Esslingen University of Applied Sciences and Malte Persike of Mainz University. Both are being honoured for developing innovative, student-centred teaching models and sustainably implementing these at their respective universities. The prize and its 50,000 euro endowment are conferred by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft together with the HRK. more»

Increased federal and state funding for universities must not be delayed

19 March 2012 - Following the hearing in the German Bundestag on improved cooperation between federal and regional governments with regard to education and scientific research, HRK-President Margret Wintermantel reinforced the HRK’s demand for an urgent constitutional amendment. HRK map of main German university research areas is now online

16 March 2012 – For the first time ever, university research in Germany has been mapped. The new online research map by the HRK shows the particular areas of research that German universities are working on. The HRK research map now provides information in German and English about 329 main areas that define the research profile of 74 universities. The potential of German universities is clearly presented to the partners both in Germany and abroad. more»
